Object Lesson: Easter Eggs > Pay Yourself First

This demonstration is an effective way to SHOW students how to pay themselves first and how money can accumulate over time. Students can see a visual representation that simulates saving money over time. While this is an activity that can be used in the classroom at any time of the year, it is especially fun to incorporate it in the spring season, when plastic eggs are easy to acquire.

The principle of Pay Yourself First basically says, “A portion of everything you earn is yours to keep.” The trick is to hold on to it, set it aside, LEAVE IT ALONE, and let it multiply. This can be incorporated into a lesson on saving, budgeting or compound interest.
